We are glad to inform you that, for the first time in its history, WOCAL will host a workshop on sign languages in Africa.*
The workshop will address the following themes:
- Imported and local sign languages in Africa
- Documentation and sign language corpora
- Signed language lexicography in Africa
- Signed language teaching in Africa
- Signed Language Planning and Standardization
The sessions will be interactive and geared towards both specialists and non-specialists in the field of African sign languages. One of our aims is to offer introduction to sign linguistics in Africa (methodology & research skills).
Registration and other information
NEW ANNOUNCEMENT: Registration fee for the workshop will cost only 20 Euros. For WOCAL, it is set at 80 Euros (100 Euros after Feburary 1st, 2009) for congress participants. Non-presenting participants, it is set at 60 Euros. Payment is also possible at the congress.

Workshop Languages
The WOCAL 6 congress language is English. Papers can be presented in any other language, however, abstracts of all papers must be submitted in English.
During the symposium, presentations in English or International Sign will be interpreted in International Sign or English respectively. Interpretations in or from other languages can not be guaranteed. Presenters are encouraged to present in International Sign as much as possible.
A brief preparatory workshop on International Sign will be given prior to the workshop. Participants will be taught necessary terms and linguistic terminology to ensure there will be effective communication.
All presentations should be accompanied by Powerpoint slides.
Of course, people are free to bring interpreters for particular sign languages.
Publication
Selected papers will be published in the proceedings of the workshop.

Call for Papers - ENDED
Papers are invited on the topics mentioned above, although papers on other topics will be considered as well. An academic committee will help to evaluate the abstracts. One paper per scholar will be accepted, as long as it meets academic standards. Participants are encouraged to devote special attention to the methodologies used in their research.
The deadline for submission is December 20th, 2008.
Notification for abstract acceptance: March 31, 2009.
